Dispatch

Dispatch is Datatech’s universal data collection program that allows bar code readers to establish and manage DDE links, as well as to search, read and write to most popular databases, including:

Access FoxPro dBase SQLServer
Paradox Oracle ADO ODBC

Picture of software and readers

Dispatch does not run on the reader. Instead, it runs on a central computer where it manages communications between up to 32 readers and all the databases and programs available on your system or network. This means your readers have minimal application overhead and unheard-of power and flexibility. With Dispatch, your barcode reader has instantaneous access to every database and every machine on your network.

The connections to these databases or Windows programs are established by the reader. The reader sends a command to Dispatch, which processes the command and sends the result back to the reader. In effect, Dispatch maps database-client and DDE-client capabilities to every bar code reader. Each reader (up to 32 at once) manages its own session independently. Don’t be satisfied with terminal emulation; demand total control!

Powerful Features

Dispatch uses 32-bit architecture! It includes many strong features, such as:

  • Access `95, `97, and 2000 compatibility,
  • TCP/IP and CrossBar support,
  • User names and passwords for database security,
  • Ability to set and search by index,
  • Support for 4 serial ports,
  • And more!

Each command now comes with a customizable identification byte, so that a reader can know that the response corresponds exactly to the expected command. Finally, to ensure back-compatibility, Dispatch can be run under a v.2.0 compatibility mode.

Database Commands

Using Dispatch, any reader can read and write to any database without the need to load the database host software. This is direct database access; your reader can check data and update it as you see fit.

The reader application communicates with the database by sending Dispatch commands. These commands tell Dispatch to perform any of the following actions:

  • Open or close a database
  • Open or close a dynaset
  • Perform an indexed search
  • Reserve tasks for the exclusive use of the reader
  • Read and write data within the dynaset
  • Move to a new record within the dynaset
  • Execute SQL commands
  • Open and close a DDE link
  • Run a program
  • Read and write to the DDE application
  • Run powerful “link execute” commands
  • And many other utility functions!
Each command generates a response to the reader. In effect, the reader is on-line and interactive with the host database, making Dispatch the ideal “operating environment” for the new radio frequency hardware now on the market.

Since the commands used are the same for all databases and all barcode readers, Dispatch is an ideal tool for integrators who must work in different environments. Your programmers don’t have to write new code; they just have to recompile the program with different libraries to run on different systems.
